CCSE vs DELE A2: differences and which you need
Spanish citizenship by residence requires two different tests, not one. People often confuse them. Here are the differences and whether you need both.
Comparison table
Both exams are run by the Instituto Cervantes but they're completely different:
| CCSE | DELE A2 | |
|---|---|---|
| What it tests | Spanish culture and Constitution | Spanish reading, writing and speaking |
| Questions | 25 (from a bank of 300) | Reading, writing, oral and listening tasks |
| Duration | 45 minutes | About 1 h 50 min |
| Pass mark | 15/25 (60%) | 60% in each section |
| Price 2026 | €85 | €130 |
| Sessions per year | 10 (monthly, except August) | About 8 |
| Exempt | Spanish ESO/FP/Bachillerato/university grads, minors, disabled | Spanish speakers, same education exemptions |
Who needs each one
The key is that exemptions are different:
- Spanish speakers (Argentina, Colombia, Cuba, etc.): only CCSE; the DELE is waived.
- Non-Spanish speakers (Morocco, Romania, UK, China, etc.): both exams.
- Spanish education graduates: neither.
- Minors and people with recognised disability: neither.
If you're unsure whether an exemption applies, see our guide on who is exempt from the CCSE.
Validity of the certificates
Both certificates (CCSE and DELE A2) are valid for 4 years from the test date. If you file the citizenship application within that period, the certificates are valid even if you took the exams a while ago.
If they expire before filing, you'd have to retake them. Plan dates carefully.
Which one is harder?
It depends on your profile:
- For native Spanish speakers: the CCSE isn't trivial. You have to study the 300 questions, especially geography and culture facts that may not be obvious.
- For people speaking Spanish as a second language: the DELE A2 is usually tougher because it tests oral and written production. The CCSE, by contrast, is multiple choice.
Statistically the CCSE pass rate is high (close to 90%) if well prepared. The DELE A2 sits at 70-80% depending on the session.
