CCSE or DELE A2: which one first?

If you need both exams for Spanish citizenship, the order matters. Here's a clear strategy depending on your situation, based on session calendars, validity and language level.

Default: CCSE first

For most applicants taking the CCSE first makes sense for these reasons:

  • More sessions: CCSE runs once a month (10/year); DELE A2 only about 8/year.
  • Faster to prepare: 2-4 weeks studying the 300 questions usually suffices; DELE A2 needs months if your Spanish is basic.
  • Cheaper: €85 vs €130 for the DELE.
  • Faster results: 3 weeks vs 2-3 months for DELE A2.

Having the CCSE in hand removes one worry and lets you focus on preparing the DELE.

When to take the DELE A2 first

Some profiles should reverse the order:

  • Your Spanish is just enough and you need preparation time. Starting with the DELE avoids last-minute rushes.
  • Your visa or residence permit expires soon and the DELE has fewer sessions: a bad calendar match could cost you months.
  • The DELE makes you more nervous: doing it first removes the bigger emotional load.

Suggested timeline

A realistic plan for someone needing both:

  • Month 1: start preparing your Spanish (classes or self-study for DELE A2).
  • Months 2-3: study the 300 CCSE questions (15 min/day). Sign up for the next session.
  • Months 3-4: take the CCSE. Within 1-3 weeks you'll have the certificate.
  • Months 5-6: with the CCSE done, take the DELE A2.
  • Month 7: with both certificates you can file the citizenship application.

This assumes continuous prep. If you already speak Spanish fluently, you can compress to 2-3 months and take both exams back-to-back.

Validity: 4 years from the exam

Both certificates are valid for 4 years, so if you take one too early and the citizenship application drags, you could lose it. As a reference:

  • The citizenship file currently takes 6 to 10 months online (see how long does the file take).
  • Add the time between obtaining the certificates and filing.
  • With one year of buffer between certificates and filing, you have 3 years for resolution: enough in the vast majority of cases.
