E-portal: how to check your Spanish citizenship file
The Ministry of Justice e-portal is the only official way to check the status of your citizenship file. We explain how to log in, what information you'll see, and what to do if your file doesn't show up.
The correct portal URL
Many people end up on fake sites or intermediaries charging for free consultations. The official URLs are:
- sede.mjusticia.gob.es: Ministry of Justice e-portal. The main one to check your citizenship file.
- carpetaciudadana.gob.es: Citizen Folder, showing all your files with the Administration. Requires Cl@ve, digital certificate or DNIe.
- www.mjusticia.gob.es: institutional site of the Ministry. No consultations, just general info.
Never pay for checking your file. The consultation is free and you do it yourself in under 2 minutes.
How to log in step by step
The simplest method, no digital certificate needed, is the Ministry of Justice portal:
- 1. Go to sede.mjusticia.gob.es.
- 2. In the main menu look for «Procedures» or «File consultation».
- 3. Select «Citizenship by residence».
- 4. Enter your NIE and the file number you got when filing.
- 5. Solve the captcha and click «Check».
- 6. You'll see the current status: «In progress», «Pending tests», «Pending oath», etc.
The file number came to you by email when you filed, and also appears on the fee payment receipt. It starts with «N» or «NRC» followed by digits.
What information is available
The Ministry's portal shows these details:
- Current status of the file (see the list of statuses and what they mean).
- Date of the latest update.
- Processing centre handling your application.
- Resolution when available: favourable or unfavourable.
What the portal does NOT tell you: estimated resolution time, reasons for delay or what's specifically missing. For that you need Carpeta Ciudadana with certificate, or to file a written request to the Ministry.
Carpeta Ciudadana: the advanced option
If you have Cl@ve permanente, digital certificate or DNIe, the Citizen Folder offers a lot more:
- Full list of all your files with the Spanish Administration, not just citizenship.
- Electronic notifications you have pending.
- History of changes to the file, not just the current status.
- You can download official documents directly.
If you don't have Cl@ve yet, it's worth requesting: it's free, obtained online or by SMS, and you'll need it for many other procedures beyond citizenship.
Common problems
The most usual issues and how to fix them:
- «File not found»: in the first weeks after filing the system hasn't loaded the file yet. Wait 4-6 weeks.
- «Invalid NIE»: check you write it in the right format (final letter included, no spaces) and that your NIE hasn't expired.
- Status doesn't change for months: normal. The «Pending report» phase lasts 2-6 months; you won't see movement.
- The portal doesn't load: there might be maintenance. Try outside office hours (evenings or weekends) and from a different browser.
