CCSE results: how to check your score and certificate
You took the exam — now comes the wait. Here are the real publication timelines, how to enter the Instituto Cervantes candidate area, what APTO and NO APTO mean, and when the certificate reaches you for the citizenship application.
When the scores are published
The Instituto Cervantes doesn't set a fixed publication date for each session, but the historical pattern is clear:
- Minimum: 8-10 days after the exam for low-volume sessions.
- Usual: 2-3 weeks for standard sessions.
- Maximum: up to 4 weeks for September sessions (post-holidays) or if there are incidents.
- Notification: you receive an email when your score is available, at the address you provided when registering.
If more than 4 weeks pass without a notification, contact your exam centre or Instituto Cervantes candidate support (info.examenes@cervantes.es).
How to check your result
Results are published in the Instituto Cervantes candidate area:
- Sign in to examenes.cervantes.es with the same username and password you created at registration.
- On the main page you'll see «My exams» or «Status of my tests».
- Click your CCSE session.
- You'll see the result: APTO or NO APTO. The numeric score is not published — only the final outcome.
Important: the Instituto Cervantes doesn't tell you how many questions you got wrong. It only reports whether you cleared the 60% threshold (15 of 25).
What APTO and NO APTO mean
The exam has only two possible outcomes:
| Result | Meaning | Minimum correct answers |
|---|---|---|
| APTO | You passed and get the certificate valid for 4 years. | 15 of 25 (60%) |
| NO APTO | You did not reach the minimum. You can retake in the next session by paying the fee again. | Fewer than 15 |
The APTO result has the same value regardless of your exact score: 15/25 counts the same as 25/25 for the citizenship application.
When you receive the official certificate
Once the score is published, the certificate is issued digitally:
- Digital certificate: appears as downloadable in your candidate area a few days after the score is published.
- Electronic verification: each certificate has a verification code (CSV) any body can check.
- The Instituto Cervantes sends it directly to the Ministry of Justice if you ticked the option at registration, so often you don't need to submit it yourself.
- Validity: 4 years from the exam date. If the citizenship application drags on, it can expire.
If you need a paper certificate (for example, a consular procedure), you can request one by email at info.examenes@cervantes.es. They send it physically signed, but it usually takes 2-4 extra weeks.
What to do if you fail
Failing the CCSE is not the end. What you can do:
- Register again in any later session. There's no limit on attempts.
- Identify your weak points: since they don't tell you what you missed, review all tasks but focus on Task 1 (Government) and Task 4 (Culture), which have the most questions.
- Practise with timed mock exams: time pressure is what fails most. Take them at apruebaccse.es until you consistently score 20+ of 25.
- Study the explanations, not just the answers. Many questions are similar and you can only tell them apart if you understand the context.
- Pay the €85 again: the fee is non-refundable and each attempt is separate.
